Cardiff, Pakistan played the third and last group stage match against Sri Lanka in which Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka by 3 wickets and qualified for the semi final of the event. In this match, sri Lanka played first and they set the target of 237 runs in 50 overs. The opening batsmen of Pakistani cricket team gave good opening stand but the middle order batting of pak cricket team was collapsed. Sarfaraz Ahmed scored well with the fast bowler Muhammad Amir. Pakistan completed the target in 45 overs and reached in the semi final of the event.
Captain Sarfaraz Ahmed played the responsible inning of 61 runs and remained not out. He became first Pakistani captain, who scored fifty while chasing the target and he also broke the record of Imran Khan, who scored 44 runs against New Zealand in the semi final match of 1992 world cup.
